No, we’re not talking about the watered-down, homogenized version that dominates corporate-run radio stations and glossy magazines, we’re talking about music that challenges the conventions of what the medium can achieve as an honest form of artistic expression. For the past six years, San Francisco’s Dead To Me have carried on the same tradition as bands like the Clash and the Pogues as they’ve crafted a unique brand of dub-inflected punk rock that’s unlike anything else currently happening in the music world. "We never thought about getting signed or going on tour, we just like wanted to hang out and play music for a few hours after work,” explains bassist/vocalist Chicken who formed Dead To Me with Jack and Brandon of the then-recently defunct street punk act One Man Army in 2003. "I feel lucky for every second I’ve experienced in this band.” However after releasing their full-length debut Cuban Ballerina in 2006, it was clear that Dead To Me­—who are currently comprised of Chicken, Ian (drums) and Nathan (guitar)—couldn’t be confined to being a mere recreational project and since then the band have traveled to exotic locales like Europe and Japan with labelmates like NOFX and Swingin’ Utters in order to bring their distinctive brand of punk rock to the masses. Dead To Me gained even more notoriety with the release of last year’s EP Little Brother, but nothing could prepare fans for the sonic progression the band would achieve with their second full-length African Elephants. "I am personally proud of the new record,” explains Ian. "The three of us pushed each other a lot with ideas and actual playing,” he continues. "DTM is honest,” he adds when asked about the band’s mission statement. "I think people like that and that’s why they connect to us.” If nothing else African Elephants is an album full of firsts—maybe most notably the first album without the band’s original guitarist Jack. "Jack was married and had a little baby boy and we all sort of realized he wasn’t going to be around much,” Ian explains. However instead of calling it quits because of this setback, the band continued to write as a trio and eventually came up with the songs that would make up African Elephants. "I think a lot of doors opened for is in that time without Jack,” Ian adds, displaying the band’s signature dose of positivity. "We are always going to miss him and his influence, but I think were all open for change. Personally I like when a band’s records mark different phases of their life. Jack’ will be back, though, I don’t doubt that. Maybe we will even get baby Jack in a few records!” The result is an album that is undeniably Dead To Me but also marks a new chapter for the band that sees them stretching out and reinventing their sound without abandoning the roots of what’s gotten them to this point. Correspondingly, tuneful tracks like "Modern Muse” and "3 Chord Strut” show how inventive the trio can be with relatively stripped-down arrangements, while tracks like reggae-inflected "A Day Without War” would make Joe Strummer proud. "It was really cool to have Nathan step and write some songs because I’ve always liked punk bands whose records each sound a little different,” Chicken responds when asked about the sonic diversity of African Elephants, adding that he takes influence from everyone from NOFX to NWA. "I have no interest in making the same record more than once, so that’s why this album is different from the past releases.” However as satisfying of a listen as African Elephants may be, Dead To Me are first and foremost a live act—and you really need to experience them in their element in order to totally appreciate the brilliance of the band. "Dead To Me have a lot of touring coming up and I can't wait because I do not like monotony,” Nathan says.” "I feel it’s safe for me to speak for the other dudes when I say none of us feel as good when we are home as we do when we are on the road,” he continues.  "If you got a show and you want us to play, we want to be there.” The band currently have plans for a full U.S. Tour this fall followed by a European Tour with Strike Anywhere where they will undoubtedly be performing plenty of songs from African Elephants. "I can’t wait to go to work tomorrow,” Nathan adds when discussing the band’s upcoming tour itinerary. While many of today’s so-called punk acts aspire to be celebrities and tastemakers, Dead To Me are content with the simple pleasures of making great music with friends, living on the road and sharing their love with people all over the world. In other words, they’ve already made it—and everything that happens from here on out is just a bonus. "It depends on what your definition of success is,” Nathan responds when asked about his goals for the band. "Music is a full-time gig,” he summarizes. Größtenteils rein instrumental lösen sich Airpeople mit Gitarren, Synths, Bässen, Drums und gezielten Spielereien von ihrer Vergangenheit und bewegen sich in Bauch, Beinen und Kopf. Melodien kreisen um sich selbst wie besoffene Eintagsfliegen, einzelne Fragmente treten heraus, offenbaren ihren Zweck nicht vordergründig, und am Ende der Reise verschmilzt alles immer wieder aufs neue zielsicher zu einer wuchtigen, rhythmischen Einheit, deren Fragilität sicher länger haften bleibt als Versuchsanordnungen musikalischer Stilrichtungsentscheidungen. Hafenklang - Konzert Far From Finished (USA) + Stumbling Pins (Kiel) FAR FROM FINISHED release FORGETTABLE, July 27 Performing on the SKULLCANDY Stage on the 2010 Vans Warped Tour ORANGE COUNTY, CA – Emerging as the new standard from Massachusetts’ storied music legacy, FAR FROM FINISHED have announced July 27th as the official release date for their highly-anticipated Old Shoe Records’ debut, ironically titled FORGETTABLE. Vocalist Steve Neary explained the title, "…being cocky just never seemed to fit with this band. Forgettable is just that. It’s an attempt to acknowledge and move on. Its a effort to be happy.” Spending the better part of a full calendar year refining the details, FAR FROM FINISHED combined everything from a string quartet to a children’s choir to craft their most ambitious collection of tracks to date. These seasoned songwriters combined unconventional instrumentation, a general disregard for expectation, and a well-rounded ear for a timeless tune, to prove once again, FAR FROM FINISHED is so much more than punk. With two studio releases under their belt, FFF’s ability to harness a real sense of melody, meshed with an infectious delivery, has established the band as a true to form diamond in the rough. The band talked about how this go ‘round musically would be received. "I think whenever you release anything there's gonna be that feeling inside you that maybe rejection's on the horizon, but honestly you can't think like that. In the past, anything we've released has been quite different from whatever came before it, so in a sense we're ready for whatever. Fear's not your friend, so we could give a fuck if people don't approve of the musical direction we took with this record,” Neary emphasized. Going to work with legendary producer Jim Siegel (Dropkick Murphys, The Unseen) at the famed Outpost Studios, FORGETTABLE is slated for a Summer 2010 release. In addition to being the band’s most diverse collection of songs, FORGETTABLE also remains one of the band’s most personally revealing efforts just the same. Guitarist Oscar Capps detailed the therapy of it all, "Lyrically and musically we tried not to hold anything back this time around. We've got stories about drugs, fathers, wives, and mothers…The good, the bad, the ugly. It's not so much where a song came from, but where it goes and the experience of sharing it with someone else that might relate. Punk rock shows have always been a hell of a lot more fun then seeing a shrink." Bassist and all around good guy, Pesky, talked about the kind of thinking the band values during such a critical time, "We just bought a new cargo van and on the dash in sharpie is written "dream big, worry little". Hafenklang - Konzert Menace (UK) + Arrested Denial (HH) Menace formed in August 1976 when singer, Morgan Webster, met school friends Noel Martin, Charlie Casey and Steve Tannett at the Hope and Anchor pub in Islington. Their first gig at the now legendary Roxy was attended by Miles Copeland from Step Forward and Illegal Records who signed Menace straight away... The end finally came in late 1979 when after lack of interest from the record companies (due to their records being banned) and a lack of interest from the music press (possibly due to the working class ethics and the working class background of the boys in the band)... Menace’s last single Final Vinyl with the classic songs Last Years Youth and Carry No Banners, which lift the reputation of the band up another notch. Hafenklang - Konzert 999 (UK) + Hi-Fi Spitfires (w/ Members of Lurkers & Red London) + Deskonocidos (USA) 999 gingen 1976 aus der Pubrock-Band KILBURN & THE HIGH ROADS hervor, wo Gitarrist und Sänger Nick Cash vorher tätig war, und nach diversen Namenswechseln stand dann Anfang 1977 mit 999 der neue Name fest, und im August erschien die erste 7" "I'm Alive/Quite Disappointing", zwei Monate später dann der Klassiker und Überhit "Nasty nasty". Und es ist durchaus bemerkenswert, dass 999 heute noch zu Dreivierteln in der Originalbesetzung von 1977 auftreten, auch wenn Sänger Nick Cash über die Jahre und wohl eher unfreiwillig zum Skinhead mutierte. Der einzige "Neue" dabei ist Arturo Bassick von den LURKERS am Bass, aber das mittlerweile auch schon seit 1991. Danach wird nichts mehr so sein, wie es war! 100 DJs werden am 30.10. das Hafenklang, nun ja, rocken. Jede/r hat einen Slot von exakt 4 Minuten. Wie wird diese Zeitspanne optimal genutzt? Wird die "Tarzanboy" Maxi butterweich ausgefadet oder knallhart gestoppt? Man könnte ja auch zwei Elvis Nummern spielen (denn 2x2=4), oder ein flottes Grindcore Set (dürften fünf oder sechs Songs) sein. Stilistisch sind jedenfalls keine Grenzen gesetzt. Das Limit ist wie so oft die unbarmherzige Zeit. Wird das große Ganze ein wunderbares, akustisches Gemälde ergeben oder eine grausame Kakophonie? Auf jeden Fall dürfte schon der Anblick der brav vor den Turntables Schlange stehenden Damen und Herren DJs, jeweils mit einem (oder, wie etwa im Falle Elvis, vielleicht auch zwei) Tonträger bewaffnet den Besuch im Hafenklang lohnen. Ihr Musikstil ist eine Mischung aus Reggae und Ska mit vielerlei Einflüssen aus dem Bereich der sogenannten Weltmusik. Neben gewohnten karibischen Klängen gibt es dann auch schon mal orintalisches und russisches für die Ohren, wobei der Sound immer melodisch bleibt. Giardini di Mirò bleiben ihrem etablierten Grundsound, dem elegischen Slow Core treu, bekommen durch die Kontexutalisierung zum Film dennoch notgedrungen den drückenden, horizontalisierenden Staub eines Morricone ab.
