After his kind of self-titled debut Paul Abbrecht's Album (Treibender Teppich Records, 2018), Sloe Paul's second album will be released on 22 January 2021 on Treibender Teppich Records and INTRNT EXPLRR. Paul Abbrecht has been around for a long time with bands, various formations as well as a producer, but Sloe Paul's second album was created - just like his previous one - in protected solitude. Almost all instruments are played by himself, wild studio jams have been replaced by nights of composing and fine-tuning.
While two singles released in 2019 had a strong disco and soul charm, the young solo artist strikes different but also quite varied notes on his second long-player.
On 12 tracks, he presents a wide range, from folky prog numbers to futuristic R'n'B and wavy art rock.
In addition to Paul's gentle synth pads, bouncy bass and laid-back drums, guests are also featured: Vitiko Schell and Veyls Menâyr bring new vocal colours to the game and complement the delicate head voice and whispering baritone. Musicians from the live band, virtuoso guitar playing, flute players and much more round off the record in a special way. Everything is held together by playful and elegant arrangements. The great mix by Max Rieger and the mastering by Enyang Urbiks provide superb sound and sonics.
All in all this album shows that pop music doesn’t have to be super linear or straight forward, that theatricality doesn't have to come across as old-fashioned. And that digging into past decades can produce something very fresh and new. You can hear influences and references in many places, but in the end the album stands on very independent feet and is neither out of time nor a child of its time.
